Holding back from gaining extra credentials?

Last month I finally became an Associate Certified Coach with the International Coach Federation. I’ve been holding back from gaining extra credentials  (I gained my professional coaching qualification five years ago), so I’m pleased I’ve finally jumped through that hoop.

But also I’m a bit disappointed in myself for not gaining these extra credentials sooner. What stopped me?

To explain, the ACC credential requires a certain level of training, a certain number of coaching hours logged and an online knowledge assessment. I had the first two of these requirements over 2 years ago, so why the wait?

Firstly I think I was a bit anxious about the knowledge assessment, at the back of my mind fearful that I didn’t know enough and would flunk the test. Secondly I think I was being tight (there’s the cost of the credential on top of the annual membership fee and because I’m self employed, I think long and hard about expenditure over a certain amount).

I think most of us can relate to these fears. Perhaps they come from a subconscious feeling of lack; that we’re not good enough and that we’re not worth the investment.

Written in black and white like that, those thoughts seem crazy, but how many of us have those sorts of ‘scripts’ running in the background, just beneath our conscious awareness?

In reality most people don’t care about your credentials once you’ve won the promotion, got the job or been awarded the business. But in a competitive working environment, doesn’t it make sense to declare your worth with an official stamp of approval?

  • Are you holding back from gaining extra credentials? Is there a test or qualification you’ve been avoiding?
  • What’s holding you back? With an extra push of effort and a commitment to do the required work, what might you accomplish?
  • What might the cost of this reluctance be to your personal growth, your career or the growth of your business?
  • What action might you take to move beyond this? (e.g. schedule in time for study /  start a savings plan to cover the costs—or put together a business case to secure funding from your boss / discuss with your mentor / speak to someone who’s already passed the qualification for their view on the pros and cons / …)
  • Consider my favourite questions: What might happen if you do? What might happen if you don’t? What might not happen if you do? What might not happen if you don’t? (Hint: beware the similarities in these questions. If you truly spend time exploring each of these, the subtle nuances of your answers might surprise you.)
