Have a little faith

Have a little faith

Sometimes knowing where we’re going, how we’re going to get there and what we have to do next still isn’t enough to get us moving and taking action.

If you’re properly prepared, you’ve planned your next step, and you have as much support in place as you need, it’s time to have a little faith and go for it.

Some day very soon you’ll look back on this and wonder why you ever doubted yourself.

There are lots of things we do every day (and take for granted) that once seemed impossible, but now seem easy.  Tying a shoelace, riding a bike, asking someone out on a date, securing a bank loan… the first time we do something it can feel daunting, difficult or downright impossible.

But once we’ve done these things a few times, once we’ve ‘exercised the muscle’, it starts to become easier — automatic, even.   We’ve gone through the four stages of learning:

  1. Unconscious incompetence
  2. Conscious incompetence
  3. Conscious competence
  4. Unconscious competence

Your assignment:

Write a list of all the things that once felt impossible and now feel easy.  Take some time to look at those achievements — those successful comfort-zone stretches — and really enjoy the feelings that come up for you.

Now consider the thing you’re stalling on and imagine a ‘Future You’ who finds it really easy.  Imagine what ‘Future You’ is thinking and feeling while they’re performing this task or project with ease.  Ask ‘Future You’ what else you could do right now to help achieve this ease.
